IN THE NEWS:
Supergrass calls it a day
April 12, 2010
Fans of Brit pop at its finest are in mourning today, as Supergrass has announced it will be breaking up.
Reuters broke the bad news, which they learned through a statement from the band, who are splitting “due to the 17-year itch.”
The statement continued on to read, “thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years.”
Supergrass hit it big in England with their first album, I Should Coco, and singles “Alright” and “Caught by the Fuzz” in 1995, and released six proper LPs total. And, for what it’s worth, 2005's Road to Rouen remains one of Editor Nick Tavares’ favorite albums ever.

PINK FLOYD WINS DIGITAL SUIT OVER EMI
If you’ve been itching to buy single tracks off of any particular Pink Floyd album, act quickly, because soon they won’t be available.
According to the BBC, Pink Floyd recently took EMI to court in a suit over digital distribution, namely, that their albums shouldn’t be broken up and sold as individual tracks. Their deal, signed before iTunes, Amazon and other digital retailers had made their mark in the UK, noted that individual songs were not to be sold without the band’s explicit permission, protected by a clause to “preserve the artistic integrity of the albums.”
EMI argued that this stood only for physical copies of their work, but the judge disagreed, and EMI has been ordered to pay damages.
If you’re looking for another reason why this could be significant, keep an eye on where the Beatles, still not present on iTunes, go from here in regards to possible digital sales.

THE STOOGES TO PERFORM 'RAW POWER' AT ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES
The official All Tomorrow’s Parties site has announced that next year’s ATP will feature Iggy and the Stooges performing their 1973 classic Raw Power in its entierty as part of its “Don’t Look Back” series.
The Stooges, as you may remember, now feature James Williamson on guitar in place of the late Ron Asheton. Williamson was also the original guitarist on Raw Power, as Asheton had moved to bass for that record.
Keeping with the “full album setlist” deal, Sleep will be performing Holy Mountain, Mudhoney will tackle Superfuzz Bigmuff plus Early Singles, and the Scientists will perform Blood Red River.
And if that wasn’t enough, they released perhaps the greatest concert poster this side of 1971 that we’ve ever seen.
ATP is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, in Monticello, N.Y. Tickets are available here.

THE FLAMING LIPS RE-RECORD 'DARK SIDE OF THE MOON'
Buried in a review of the Flaming Lips’ new album, Embryonic, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Lips will be following up their experimental double album with a full cover of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, featuring guest appearances by Henry Rollins and Peaches.
Catch your breath yet? OK, continuing.
The story continues by noting that Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, fronted by Wayne Coyne’s nephew Dennis Coyne, will also collaborate on the album, which may start out as an iTunes-only release.
Coyne goes on to talk about that project on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, and you can watch their performance of "Eclipse" here.
Also, however it's released, it will likely be on Warner Bros., the band's label since their 1990 album In A Priest Driven Ambulance. Their current deal ends with Embryonic, but Coyne was quick to note that they intend to stay on the label.
“It was never the big corporate label trying to change the weirdos from Oklahoma,” Coyne told the Times. “They made it possible we could be who we are. I will always owe them. That’s the secret no one really ever cares about. We owe Warner Bros. for our whole way of being.”

CRAIG FINN WORKING ON 'FARGO ROCK CITY' SCREENPLAY
According to The A.V. Club, Craig Finn, frontman for The Hold Steady, is working with television writer Tom Ruprecht (The Late Show with David Letterman) on a screenplay based on Chuck Klosterman’s best-selling book, Fargo Rock City. Klosterman will also be on hand to join in producing.
Fargo Rock City is Klosterman’s ode to growing up one of the few metal heads in 1980s North Dakota, and the screenplay will center around a group of high school seniors.
“Seventeen or eighteen is the perfect age for characters in a movie like this, because it’s at that age that you have drivers licenses and a certain amount of independence, but you’re still young enough that you can totally make terrible decisions,” Finn told Risky Business. “And you’re still young enough that you can have a two-hour argument over whether Motley Crue would beat Guns ‘N Roses in a fight.”

THREE PULP REISSUES ON THE WAY
Billboard.com is reporting that three deluxe reissues from Pulp will be made available in the U.S. on Nov. 17.
The albums — 1994’s His ‘N’ Hers, 1995’s Different Class and 1998’s Hardcore — will be released as double-disc packages with b-sides, demos and extended liner notes by Jarvis Cocker himself.
Pulp officially split in 2002 with Cocker going solo, and he has said in the past that he’s not interested in reuniting the band for artistic reasons, though he has admitted that the financial reality of a reunion could sway him. It seems as though for the meantime, these reissues will have to tide Pulp fans over.

WAS BRIAN JONES MURDERED?
And according to a report by Reuters, the band’s former road manager Sam Cutler is placing the blame squarely on Tom Keylock, the band’s former chauffeur. Keylock had previously persuaded Frank Thorogood to confess to the crime on his deathbed in 1993. Cutler also notes that Keylock was the only suspect in an independent investigation launched by Allen Klein, the Rolling Stones manager at the time, who had no faith in the work of British investigators at the time.
Jones, who died at his home in East Sussex on July 3, 1969, was an excellent swimmer by many reports, and the true cause of death has long been debated. Many close to him felt that it was very unlikely he would have drowned in his own pool.

NOEL GALLAGHER LEAVES OASIS
Past history makes this seem a little like the boy crying wolf, but Noel Gallagher has announced that he's leaving Oasis after reaching a point where he can no longer work with his brother, frontman Liam Gallagher.
"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," Noel wrote. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."
The New York Times notes that the band cancelled a festival gig in Paris the previous Friday, with a message displayed to concertgoers reading, “As a result of an altercation within the band, the Oasis gig has been canceled.”
